LEED Compliance & Sustainability

Is your tile LEED compliant?

Yes, all MILE®stone products can help earn LEED points through various credits like Material & Resources (regionally sourced products, waste management), Indoor Environmental Quality (low-emitting materials), and others. Florim USA’s Green Squared Certification also provides transparency regarding material ingredients, ensuring compliance with VOC emissions and use of environmentally friendly materials. For more information, contact customercare@florimusa.com.

Where do your raw materials come from?

The bulk of our raw materials are sourced from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi. We incorporate recycled materials such as glass and reuse production residues, contributing to our ecologically friendly product line.

Pre-Installation Checklist

How do I ensure proper installation?
  • Select tiles from the same batch number, size, and shade. This information is printed on the label of every carton below the name of the tile.
  • Visually inspect the tiles before installation. If there is any concern regarding the tile, immediately reach out to your retailer prior to proceeding with installation. Claims will not be accepted after tiles have been set.
  • Mix tiles from different boxes to ensure a non-repeat look. Tile has a natural shade variation, and this step is crucial to achieve the intended overall look of the tile.
  • Ensure you have purchased the correct size spacers for the tile you are installing. For pressed tile, the smallest suggested grout joint size is 3/16", and 1/8" for rectified tile.

      Cutting, Tools, & General Guidelines

Why is my tile chipping or cracking when I make cuts?
Porcelain tiles require a diamond tip blade and it’s recommended to use a wet saw for clean cuts. Lightly score the tile and use a snap cutter or drill to avoid chipping. Replace dull blades to prevent flaking or chipping.
What kind of blade should I use in my wet saw?
Always use a diamond wet saw blade when cutting porcelain tile with a wet saw. Periodically check the condition of the blade and replace when worn to ensure smooth and successful cuts.
Do I need to use spacers? What size do I use?
Tile spacers should always be used when installing tile. A minimum grout joint of 3/16" (5mm) is recommended for pressed tiles, and a minimum of 1/8" (3mm) is recommended for rectified tiles.
How much of an offset should I use?
A 30% offset is generally recommended for a staggered tile placement. For plank sizes, such as 6"x24" or 8"x48", a 1/3 (33%) offset with a proper grout joint size is recommended to reduce lippage. Refer to TCNA guidelines for warpage allowances.
What trowel size should I use?
The trowel size depends on the tile size. For tiles 16 inches or larger, use a ½” x ½” trowel. Ensure 85% thinset mortar coverage in dry areas and 95% in wet areas like showers.
How much tile or how many square feet do I need to complete my project?
Multiply the length by the width of the area to calculate the square footage. Always add 10% extra to account for breakage and cuts. Online calculators can assist with these estimates.
Do I need to seal the tiles?
No. MILE®stone tile is ready to be installed straight out of the box. There is no need to seal the tile before or after installation, and any alteration to the surface of the tile might damage the glaze and thus void the tile's warranty.
      Wet Area Warning
Porcelain tiles can be slippery when wet. If needed, MILE®stone offers finishes that are suitable for wet applications.

      Tile Appearance

What's the difference between Calibrated and Rectified Tile?

Calibrated tiles have consistent dimensions within an allowed deviation. These tiles tend to be more cost-effective, since there are no further processes applied to the tiles after they are fired. This also means that once installed, calibrated tiles will have a wider grout joint compared to rectified tiles.

Rectified tiles are precisely ground down after firing to ensure an exact, uniform size. Due to the precise nature of the rectified edge and a more uniform size, smaller grout joints are possible when using rectified tile.

Why is there so much shade or size variation in my tile?
Variations occur due to differences in lot numbers. Ensure the same size, shade, and job lot (JO) numbers are used. Open and inspect several boxes before installation to check for consistency.
Can I get all one color in a carton for the multicolor tile?

No, tiles are randomly boxed in a mass production facility. Lay out the tiles before installation to ensure the desired look.

Is a grout line recommended or needed?

Yes, a minimum grout joint of 3/16” (5mm) is recommended for pressed tiles. For staggered tile placement, a 30% offset is advised. For ½ offset brick patterns, use a larger grout joint (minimum ¼”) to compensate for size variations in pressed tiles.

What color grout should I use?
Grout color is a personal choice. You can select a color that blends with the tile for a cohesive look, or a contrasting grout for added visual impact.
How do I install planks or large format tile?
Planks such as 6×24 or 8×48 should be installed at a 1/3 (33%) offset to reduce lippage. Refer to TCNA guidelines for warpage allowances.
Can I install this tile in a modular format?
Most Florim USA products can be installed in a modular format, but verify with your sales representative to ensure suitability.
Can I install this tile outside?
Yes, porcelain tile is suitable for outdoor use and can withstand freeze-thaw cycles. Ensure to select a tile with adequate traction for areas that may become wet or slippery.
Can I install this tile in the shower or on a fireplace?
Yes, porcelain tile is ideal for both areas due to its water and heat resistance. Make sure to use the appropriate grout and substrate for these environments.
